MEET REPORTS / JR OLYMPICS
    · 2004 MARYLAND LEVEL 10 STATES

ROTATION ONE: Kareen Kaveh (Hills) started vault with a powerful laidout Yurchenko full (9.475). Teammate Ali Stakem, battling an ear infection causing her to miss recent practice sessions, followed with an equally strong vault in the tucked position (9.25). Danielle Bryan came along with a fantastic Hristiakieva (9.75) while Teri Cole-Diamond, only recently cleared to compete all around due to injuries, churned out a clean tucked Yurchenko (8.85). While their juniors vaulted, the Hills seniors took to the floor, with Cassie Martin displaying unquestionably the best presentation of the competition (Arabian double front, 9.625). Brittney Morgan struggled slightly on the landings of some of her passes (9.25). Sharing the floor was Fairland's Decilia Willacy, who triple-twisted her way to a 9.625 with a slick jazz routine. Another strong routine came from Harford's Holly Weber, who is just 16 but graduating high school this year (9.575).

Frederick's Brooke Wheeler made her way through a clean beam set (9.2), while teammate Lisa Reifschneider fell twice (8.25). These gymnasts display quite a bit of confidence in competition - probably a result of their competition on the pre-elite circuit. Meanwhile, Docksiders were on bars, with clean Giengers from Kara Feeney and Rachel Fincham (9.075 and 9.1, respectively).

ROTATION TWO: Hills juniors took to the bars, where Kaveh swung a clean Shaposhnikova to shootover to handstand (9.425), Cole-Diamond floated through an effortless Pak (9.25) and Bryan had a strong Tkatchev to straddle back to handstand (9.225). On vault, Hills' Brittney Morgan posted a meet-high 9.775 with her Hristakieva, while Cassie Martin did a clean laidout Yurchenko for 9.225. Also on vault, Holly Weber earned a 9.575 for a strong front pike. On floor, Reifschneider had a few uncharacteristic stumbles (9.3), though it was Wheeler's fantastic presentation that earned one of the day's higher scores (9.575).

ROTATION THREE: Morgan's bars were fantastics (Jaeger; double front dismount; 9.65) while Martin missed a Tkatchev (8.7). On beam, Stakem had a clean routine going until she came off on a sheep jump + back tuck (8.75), while Bryan fell on a double back dismount (9.3). Kaveh managed to scrape together a clean routine (front aerial; switch leap + gainer layout; sheep jump; 9.4) while Cole-Diamond's confident presentation earned her a 9.275. The Docksiders made strong floor routines, especially Alexis Greene who tossed a full-in (9.675) and Fincham, whose relatively simple tumbling was clean (9.35). Reifschneider vaulted a strong piked front (9.55) with teammate Wheeler, recovering from injury, opting to do a simpler piked Yurchenko (9.0).

ROTATION FOUR: Fincham attempted the day's most difficult vault, a piked Barani, but fell; she intelligently elected to do a front pike for her second vault, which scored a 9.35. Greene was also powerful on her front pike (9.45). Reifschneider made her bar routine (9.2), with Wheeler struggling a bit, falling out of a pirouette and again on a double pike dismount. Her sequence of giant full to Gienger was one of the nicest of the day, and she shows very smooth, clean lines; she's certainly one to look out for in the future (8.5). Martin was clean on beam (9.5), with Morgan falling twice throughout the routine and again on her dismount (8.0). Hills showed characteristically clean presentation on floor; Stakem watered down her tumbling (9.375); Kaveh fell out of bounds on an Arabian double front (8.75); Bryan stumbled out of bounds on her closing double tuck, but had a clean Arabian double front (9.15); Cole-Diamond's clean routine earned her a 9.35 and the title for her age group.

Very good gymnastics was on display at this year's Maryland championships, but unfortunately nobody could pull together a *fantastic* meet - lots of falls and mistakes. Hopefully, by Regionals, all of the problems will be worked out and Maryland will be well-represented on the National level this spring!
