MEET REPORTS / JR OLYMPICS
ยท 2004 SOUTH CAROLINA LEVEL 10 STATES

ROTATION ONE: Raven Magwood from Greenville International stuck her front tuck on vault (9.300) and unfortunately her teammate who was supposed to compete with her injured her ankle badly and needs to have surgery to insert screws. She was the "Liz Tricase" of the meet though, cheering for everyone. Amy Williams of Aiken did a nice piked Yurchenko (8.900) and her teammate Sally Moser (who looks exactly like a mix between Kaitlin White and Olga Mostepanova) followed with a gorgeous layout Yurchenko (9.200), both with clean and solid landings. Maria Fox from Charleston struggled in warmups on her toe-shoot but made it in the meet, as well as a giant full through to shootover and a double tuck with one step (8.600). Brittany Jackson fell on her front tuck vault but took just a step on the 2nd (9.300) while Jamie Mula touched down on her double tuck bars dismount (8.475). Karmen Pinckney did a really nice pike Tsuk (8.875). Jane Marie Page from North Myrtle Beach dragged her feet on the mat after her shootover but had a nice double tuck dismount (8.400) while Alyssa Chapman from Kazeev's fell on both of her front tuck vault attempts (8.300). Kelsey Roberts from Charleston caught her toe shoot in a dead hang but had a huge toe-on toe-off front tuck dismount with one step on the landing (8.050). Karli Jones from Carolina Gymnastics was the hometown favorite and showed why with a huge Jaeger, shootover, and probably the highest toe-on toe-off front tuck dismount ever, complete with a stuck landing (9.125). Valorie Wilson from North Myrtle Beach fall on her Gienger and hit her feet on the low bar during a giant.

ROTATION TWO: Mula did a nice piked Yurchenko but fell on her layout attempt and Page did a piked Yurchenko also (9.000). Williams did a straddle back and a toe-on toe-off front pike but struggled with some pirouettes (8.575) while Moser looked elite-calibre with her stalder full on the low bar, stalder 1/2 to front giant to Endo to double front but unfortunately stumbled back to her seat (8.550). Roberts did a piked Yurchenko with her head too close to the vault for just about everyone in the audience (8.600) and Jones rocked a piked front (9.400). She could easily do a layout! Jackson had the worst routine of the day on bars, falling four times (grip change, straddle back, toe shoot, double tuck, 6.550). Wilson fell on her first attempt at a piked Yurchenko but stuck the 2nd (8.800) while Fox completed a nice tucked Yurchenko (8.875). Pinckney fell out of a giant full but drilled her double tuck (8.250) but Chapman had the opposite problem, hitting a clean routine (toe shoot, clear hip to handstand) but falling on her double tuck (8.250). Magwood struggled during warmups but hit a very difficult and unique set of clear hip to toe shoot, healy to Pak salto, and stuck her double tuck (9.000).

ROTATION THREE: Moser opened floor and just as she was running for her first pass, her music cut off. She fell on her double pike, but had solid front tumbling, and a clean double twist all to the tune of the audience clapping. Fortunately she was allowed to repeat her routine at the end of the rotation and it was the highlight of the meet. With gorgeous choreography, presentation, and form she truly resembled the South Carolina version of Olga Mostepanova, a Soviet great from the 1980s. The second time around she nailed her double pike and garnered the loudest applause of the day (9.325). It's important to note that she had the most beautiful switch leap ever performed, nearing 190 degrees! Roberts fell on a switch side leap and had a clean full twist while Jackson tumbled a lot of twisting passes to Gypsy Kings (8.800). Beam was the weakest event for Jones, who did a switch leap to 2 straddle jumps, punch front to flip flop, switch leap to sheep jump, and a 1 1/2 twist with huge steps (9.000). Pinckney fell on her double pike but had a nice 2 1/2 twist and choreography to arabian music (8.250). Fox fell on her flip flop to layout and front walkover but showed nice originality with a Korbut (8.200). Chapman tumbled a 2 1/2 twist, double pike, and full twist (9.000) while Magwood did a front layout full to punch front but tripped on her toe on her middle pass and had a messy fall (8.450). Her coaches and some of the meet staff were working with her for about ten minutes after she finished but her parents were proud to report that she would be okay. Mula fell on a back pike and her two straddle jump combination (8.075) and Williams had the cutest routine of the day with a "Funky Town" medley. She also had impressive and high tumbling, showing a double pike and nice front tumbling (9.000).

ROTATION FOUR: Roberts fell on her double tuck and full twist (7.950) but Jones drew loud applause for her double pike, front layout to front full and another front full (9.100). Jackson had a clean routine with the exception of one fall, sticking her gainer front full (8.400). Pinckney had a nice aerial cartwheel and a drilled 1 1/2 twist dismount (9.225) while Wilson struggled on floor to "My Drag," falling on her opening double tuck and finishing with a full twist (8.400). Chapman fell off beam twice, once on a punch front, but had a nice landing on her front full dismount (8.150). Fox had a mix of classic rock hits but unfortunately went out of bounds on her double tuck and dance combination and fell on a front tuck. Magwood had the best beam routine of the day with a switch leap to wolf 3/4, punch front to wolf jump, back tuck, and a stuck 1 1/2 twist (9.225). Mula fell on her front full during her "All That Jazz" routine (8.650) while Aiken closed their meet with shaky beam routines. Williams had a nice flip flop to back tuck, switch side, and front layout dismount but fell on her switch leap to Popa (8.300); Moser struggled on her Popa throughout warmups and ended up cheating it in the meet and also fell on her flip flop to 2 foot layout. She closed with a nice punch front and double twist dismount (8.600).
