CODE OF POINTS

The rules and scoring system of gymnastics, otherwise known as the Code of Points (COP), can be confusing! But when the rules are examined closely, it starts to make sense... sort of! Here's a concise look at the rules for the 2009-2012 quadrennium that will hopefully clarify things for you.

HOW TO CALCULATE A D SCORE..

8 hardest elements, including the dismount (DV); for BB/FX, 3 dance elements are counted
    + any connection bonus (CV)
+ 2.50 if composition requirements (CR) are fulfilled
 -------------------------------------------------------------------
  = D Score

EXAMPLE CALCULATION

Ksenia Semyonova, 2009 Europeans Floor Final
piked full-in (E), 2 1/2 twist (D) + front layout 1/2 (B), switch ring (C) + tour jete 1/2 (B), double turn in back attitude (C), 1 1/2 twist (C) + front layout 1/1 (C), whip + double pike (D)

Top 8 Elements (including 3 Dance) = 2.70
C B C, E D C C D

Composition Requirements = 2.50
a) dance pass of 2 different leaps/hops, 1 with 180º split
- fulfilled by switch ring to tour jete 1/2
b) tumbling pass with 2 different saltos
- fulfilled by 1 1/2 twist to front layout 1/1
c) salto forward/sideward AND backward
fulfilled by front layout 1/2, double pike
d) double salto AND salto with at least full twist
- fulfilled by piked full-in, front layout 1/1
e) dismount (C dismounts lose .2)
- fulfilled by double pike

Connection Value = 0.20
D + B = 0.10
C + C = 0.10

2.50 + 0.20 + 2.70 = 5.40
SKILL VALUE CHARTS
VAULT / BARS / BEAM / FLOOR

COMPOSITION REQUIREMENTS

Bars
a) Flight from high to low bar AND low to high bar
b) Flight released & caught on same bar
c) at least 2 different grips AND a close-bar/circling element
d) non-flight skill with a full turn
e) D or higher dismount (C dismounts lose .2)

Beam
a) dance + dance connection, 1 with 180º split
b) turn
c) acro series (at least of 2 flight elements, 1 being a salto)
d) forward/sideward AND backward acro elements
e) dismount (C dismounts lose .2)

Floor
a) dance pass of 2 different leaps/hops, 1 with 180º split
b) tumbling pass with 2 different saltos
c) salto forward/sideward AND backward
d) double salto AND salto with at least full twist
e) dismount (C dismounts lose .2)

Notes
- elements can be repeated if they are in combination (ex: Tkatchev + Tkatchev, front aerial + front aerial)
- a max of 4 tumbling passes can be performed on floor
- floor dismount is considered the hardest element in the last tumbling pass

CONNECTION VALUES

Bars
D flight from HB to LB + C = 0.10
D + D = 0.10
D (flight on same bar or LB to HB) + C (on HB) = 0.20
D + E = 0.20
E + E = 0.20

- C/D elements must have flight or at least a 1/2 turn
- empty/intermediate swings between skills prevents connection

Beam
acro: B + E = 0.10      (dismounts do not count)
acro: B + F = 0.20      (dismounts do not count)
acro: B + B + D = 0.10
acro: B + B + E = 0.20
acro: B + C + D = 0.20
acro: C + B + C = 0.10
acro: C + C + C = 0.20

acro: C or D + D = 0.10 **
- uses front to back motion  (example: Onodi (D) + back tuck (C), front aerial (D) + side somi (D))

acro: C or D + D = 0.20 **
- 1st skill has hand support & lands on 2 feet; 2nd skill rebounds immediately   (example: front handspring to 2 feet + front tuck, Onodi to 2 feet + aerial roundoff from 2 feet)
- 1st skill lands on 1 foot, immediate rebound from both legs into 2nd skill   (example: front aerial + front tuck from 2 feet, gainer layout + Onodi from 2 feet)

turns: A + C = 0.10
turns: C + A = 0.10
mix: C + C = 0.10        (ex: switch leap + back tuck)
mix: D salto to 1 foot + A turn = 0.10

Floor
C thru to D = 0.10
A + A thru to D = 0.10
C thru to E = 0.20
A + A + D = 0.10
B + D = 0.10
C + C = 0.10
A + E = 0.20
B + E = 0.20
C + D = 0.20
D salto + A jump = 0.10
